Sixteen Steel
Engravings. And Corresponding Biographies from:
LA BELGIQUE
HORTICOLE ANNALES
D'HORTICULTURE BELGE ET ÉTAGÈRE
Belgium 1862-1884
|
The Ending of the nineteenth century produced magnificent
publications brought about through the impetus of botanical exploration,
which reached its peak just before the turn of the century. The body of
art and science were tightly interwoven. It was a time when the natural
sciences spawned the most artful expression of the printer's craft ever
achieved.
During the 19th century Belgium became the center of flower and fruit
cultivation on the European continent and a number of important
publications were produced. LA BELGIQUE HORTICOLE began publication in
1851 and captured beautifully colored botanical chromolithographs. Each
annual edition contained a steel engraving along with a biography of a prominent
naturalist, horticulturist, botanical artist, physician, or scientist.
Ghent (Gand) was the center of Horticulture and market gardening. It is
one of Belgium's oldest cities and the historic capital of Flanders. Sixteen
of these steel engravings along with their corresponding
biographies are offered here.
These attractive original (not reproduction prints) are from
Belgique Horticole spanning the years from 1862-1884. These stunning
full-paged Steel engravings measure 6 ½" x 9 ½". The ORIGINAL
DESCRIPTIVE BIOGRAPHICAL TEXT (in French) is included. Please click
on each individual image to enlarge.
