This CD contains 51 images of birds of prey / raptors from Volume 1 of
Coloured Figures of British Birds by Lord Lilford. These images were produced
from the superb coloured lithographed plates, most chromolithographed, but
several hand-coloured, by Archibald Thorburn and J.G. Keulemans and a few by
George Edward Lodge and W. Foster. This is a handsome set of images, comprising
one of the best works on British Birds that has ever been undertaken. The 51
plates represent chromolithography at its best "A Complete Report",
printed at the time of Lord Lilford's death- (in "The Field", on Feb.
9th, 1901), discussed an exhibition of Thorburn's drawings at Carter's Gallery
in Jermyn Street, W1., thus: "Mr Thorburn is well known to the public as
being the artist, who in conjunction with Lord Lilford, published the
illustrated volumes on British Birds, the merit of which is so highly estimated,
that volumes are not now to be obtained under considerably more than double the
price at which they were originally published." Keulemans started as
Lilford's primary artist, but on becoming ill, was superceded by Archibald
Thorburn, who went on to complete more than 250 plates to the seven volume work.
"Lilford was an exacting task-master, and knew exactly what he expected
from each plate. Thorburn became a frequent visitor to Lilford, where his host
kept an extensive collection of birds on his estate, which in addition to
aviaries included a pinetum, falconer's quarters, and ponds." (Skipwith p.
168) The relationship between the two men was mutually beneficial, with Thorburn
going on to depict many of Lilford's favorites, "the most interesting and
exotic residents." Nissen IVB 563; Zimmer p. 399; Fine Bird Books p. 42.
